The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
