During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
