The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
