At Least 98 Palestinians Have Died in Custody Since October 2023, Israeli Data Reveals
Based on figures from Israel, a minimum of 98 Palestinian individuals have lost their lives while detained beginning in October 2023. Some deaths in confinement have been publicly known, including a 50-year-old healthcare leader who died in prison after 120 days in custody.
An inmate held with the victim testified that he was led to the yard by correctional officers shortly before his demise, visibly injured and exposed from the hips downward. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.
Further inmates who died in Israeli custody stay unnamed. Detention administrators and military gave analysts with the number of deaths in custody, and limited further data such as the location where they died, but not the prisoners’ names.
Documentation Problems
Regarding 21 occurrences, primarily people from Gaza, analysts were not able to connect the few details supplied by government bodies to a casualty registered by human rights groups, by means of accounts from released detainees or accounts in the news outlets.
