A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the hours before Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other individuals also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on Monday would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to predict everything from elections to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
